Alfred Hitchcock | 1899 - 1980

Hitchcock is one of the all-time greats. He only made black-and-white movies and didn’t have access to modern special effects. Still, he beautifully captures the tension and dramaturgy in his films and has immaculate vision. He created movies like Psycho, Frenzy, and The Birds.

Christopher Nolan | 1970 -

Nolan is actively making great movies. The director combines his impressive gaze with modern possibilities. He uses spectacular effects and images but can equally perform on a low budget. His portfolio includes well-known films like Memento, Inception, and Interstellar.

David Fincher | 1962 -

Fincher is one of the first directors I learned to love. He makes thrilling films that convey a deeper message. He writes outstanding screenplays (frequently with Plot Twists) and captures them beautifully. Fincher directed movies like Fight Club, Se7en, and The Game.

David Lynch | 1946 -

Lynch is sort of crazy. His movies are very dark and deeply sad. They pull the viewer into surreal worlds by creating frames and compositions that cannot be forgotten. He composed films like Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive.

Joel & Ethan Coen | 1954 - & 1957 -

The Coen brothers have a unique way of choosing their protagonists and framing their movies. The brothers directed hilarious comedies like The Big Lebowski and Fargo, but are in no way limited as they showed with No Country for Old Men.

Martin Scorsese | 1942 -

Scorsese makes thrilling movies. He loves to make Gangster movies and has directed some of the greatest films in this genre. However, he is not limited in that regard. Scorsese is the father of all-time greats like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Shutter Island.

Orson Welles | 1915 - 1985

Welles is an early director and one of the GOATs. He didn’t have fancy equipment or special effects. Still, he created beautiful films with magnificent shots. His vision is one of a kind. Welles directed movies like Citizen Kane, The Third Man, and Touch of Evil.

Quentin Tarantino | 1963 -

Tarantino is fantastic for starting your cinematic journey. The many references in his movies show his burning love for old films. He excels in pacing, timing, and dramaturgy. Tarantino directed movies like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Inglorious Basterds.

Stanley Kubrick | 1928 - 1999

Kubrick is my personal favorite. He is an obsessive genius and created absolute masterpieces. He explores many different genres but his style always remains the same. He directed 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange.
